Business jets are priced on an enormous scale — a well-equipped light jet can cost less than a large home in a major U.S. city while a new large cabin or ultra long range aircraft can run into the tens of millions of dollars but that purchase price is not what gets you in the door. What determines whether an aircraft fits your budget over time is the sum total of fixed annual costs, variable hourly costs and how many hours you actually fly each year.

Knowing both halves of that equation (acquisition cost and true operating cost) is the difference between a budget that holds up and one that gets blown out in year one.

Two Cost Buckets: What You Pay to Buy vs. What You Pay to Fly

Every business jet ownership budget can be divided into two buckets: what you pay to buy and what you pay to fly.

Fixed costs are the expenses you pay no matter how much you fly — hangar rent, insurance premiums, crew salaries, recurrent training and management fees. They stay roughly constant whether the aircraft flies 50 hours a year or 500.

Variable costs increase with usage — fuel, engine program fees, maintenance labor and landing or handling charges. These only accrue when the aircraft is in the air so total annual cost depends heavily on flight hours not just which plane you own.

Both categories vary significantly by aircraft category so it helps to look at the market in segments rather than as one number.

What Business Jets Cost to Buy, by Category?

The purchase prices of new business jets in 2026 fall roughly into these bands:

  • Very light jets: $3 million to $7 million.

  • Light jets: $8 million to $16 million

  • Midsize jets: $16 million to $25 million

  • Super-midsize jets: $26 million to $38 million

  • Large-cabin jets: $40 million to $62 million

  • Ultra long range jets: $65 million to $80 million

Pre owned pricing is much lower and depends on total flight hours, engine program enrollment, avionics currency etc. For example pre owned midsize jets trade in the $6 million to $18 million range depending on age/equipment while pre owned light jets can be found from roughly $1.5 million to $15 million depending on model and condition.

Aircraft enrolled in engine maintenance programs and fresh pre purchase inspections tend to command a premium over comparable aircraft without them.

Fixed Annual Costs of Ownership

Regardless of aircraft size, most owners budget for the following fixed costs every year:

  • Crew salaries. Bigger more complex aircraft have two pilots by default and cabin crew for longer legs (raises this line item as you move up category).

  • Hangar and tie down fees. These vary by home airport and region (large metro fields command higher rates than smaller regional fields).

  • Insurance. Premiums increase with aircraft value, passenger capacity and pilot experience requirements.

  • Recurrent training. Pilots need annual simulator-based recurrent training (predictable but non-trivial line item).

  • Management fees if the aircraft is operated through a third party management company rather than in house.

Variable Hourly Operating Costs by Category

Hourly operating costs (sometimes called direct operating costs) include fuel, engine program fees and maintenance labor and parts. 2026 ranges by category:

  • Very light jets: about $1,800 to $2,500 per hour.

  • Light jets: about $2,800 to $4,200 per flight hour.

  • Midsize jets: about $3,800 to $5,500 per flight hour.

  • Super-midsize jets: about $5,000 to $7,000 per flight hour.

  • Large cabin jets: about $6,500 to $9,500 per flight hour.

  • Ultra long range jets: about $8,500 to $12,500 per flight hour.

Fuel usually accounts for the largest single share of these hourly figures — often a quarter to a third of total operating cost — followed by engine program fees (which can be few hundred dollars an hour on very light jets up to well over $1,500 an hour on large cabin aircraft enrolled in programs such as Rolls Royce CorporateCare, Pratt & Whitney ESP or JSSI).

What Total Annual Ownership Looks Like

Add fixed and variable costs together, and typical total annual ownership budgets look roughly like this at moderate utilization (200 flight hours per year):

  • Midsize jets: $500k to $800k per year.

  • Super-midsize jets: $700k to $1.1 million per year.

  • Light and very light jets: generally lower ($500k to $900k or so depending on crew and hangar arrangements)

  • Large-cabin and ultra-long range jets: usually $2 million to $6 million or more per year (higher crew requirements, larger hangar footprints, higher fuel burn).

These figures move a lot with utilization. An aircraft flown 400 hours a year will have a noticeably higher variable-cost total than the same aircraft flown 150 hours even though fixed cost side barely changes.

How Utilization Changes the Ownership Math

One of the most consistent findings across the industry is that full ownership makes the most sense above about 200 to 300 flight hours per year.

Below that, fixed costs (crew, hangar, insurance, training) get spread out too thinly over too few flight hours and per-hour cost of ownership climbs sharply compared to charter or a fractional share.

This is something that needs to be modeled carefully before purchase since two owners flying the same type of aircraft but at very different annual hours can have dramatically different total costs of ownership per flight hour even though their fixed costs are nearly identical.

Where Owners Can Manage Total Cost of Ownership?

Engine program enrollment

Enrollment in a manufacturer or third-party engine program (which costs an hourly fee) turns unpredictable overhaul costs into stable per hour rate — and tends to support stronger resale value as well.

Right-sizing the aircraft to your mission

Buying more range or cabin size than you actually need for typical trips inflates both fixed and variable costs unnecessarily. Matching aircraft category to actual routes and passenger loads is one of the most effective ways to control total spend.

Charter offset

Some owners charter their aircraft out when not used personally to help cover fixed costs but that has its own trade-offs (wear, scheduling flexibility and management complexity).

Aircraft within the same category

Operating costs don’t scale linearly with category — two aircraft with similar range and cabin size can be very different hourly cost wise depending on engine efficiency, maintenance program design and age.

The best comparisons are within category where mission capability is similar but cost differences become a real decision factor.
